Plot Synopsis, Review
Antarctica… The most isolated landmass on Earth 90° S. latitude, zero E. longitude. Six million square miles of ice. Six months of darkness. Temperatures at minus-120 degrees. Winds at 100 miles per hour. Nature never intended you to survive here...For U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko, things are about to get even more dangerous. The only law enforcement in this unforgiving territory, she has just been sent to investigate a body on the ice. Antarctica’s first homicide. A shocking discovery in itself, it will plunge her into an even more bizarre mystery and the revelation of secrets long-buried under the endless ice…secrets that someone believes are still worth killing for. As Stetko races to find the killer before he finds her, winter is already closing in. In the deadly Antarctic whiteout, she won’t see him till he’s a breath away.
Mediocre. I can see why this film was such a commercial failure. All the film has to offer is Kate Beckinsale, Antarctica and whirlwind storms with a killer. While the films excelles in keeping a icy-cold mood, it's eventual downfall is that the revealing off the killer's motive isn't really something to be killing over, especially when they too are not the only person in on the act. It also succeeds in keeping us watching and waiting for our questions to be answered. The ending was enlightening, rather than having a finish left open for a sequel where one really shouldn't be. Action and tension sequences kept you on the edge of your seat, but the sheer predictability of their outcome's was a shame.
The plot was adapted from a graphic novel, and is the latest film from my favourite company "Dark Castle Entertainment". There is no doubt the plot is very thin, and i'm surprised it managed to fit 1hr and 40mins on the simple plot. The flashback of Carrie was useful, but I think character building could've been improved to make us alot more sympathetic with her.
The acting was good. "Kate Beckinsale" is the obvious star, and while she was very energetic and enthusiastic, I think her character was a little too depressing. "Gabriel Macht" and "Tom Skerritt" had supporting roles, and were good too. Fellow AUssie "Alex O'Loughlin" also had a role.
Overall "Whiteout" succeed's in keeping you watching and intrigued, but it's failure to have a believable ending and the motive's for killing was a major letdown. My rating is 2.5/5.
