The first half of the year has had some good films, but has also had some crap ones too.

January saw the release of two films. The Darkest Hour was another 3D converted flick that had a crappy marketing effort from Fox, which resulted in underwhelming results at the BO. Opening on a medium wide 156 screens the film opened with $627k and quickly fizzled out. Sony heavily marketed the 4th installment in the popular and consistently performing Underworld franchise. It marked the return of Kate Beckinsale and was the first in the franchise to be in 3D. The film opened with over $2.7m and became the biggest hit of the franchise thus far.

March's only release was heavily marketed, poorly recieved The Devil Inside, which was a huge hit in the US. Opening on 169 screens, the crap-tacular film failed to live up to expectations with a $736k opening. It fizzled out quickly.

International horror hit The Wman In Black was originally scrapped for Australian release. Aussies started abusing Roadshow Films via facebook with backlash after they had also scrapped cinema release plans for highly acclaimed The Cabin In The Woods too. The Woman In Black was eventually released widely on 168 screens to an pathetic $375k. They really must regret that now. So many people wanted that film, yet couldn't be bothered seeing it. It was actually pretty good. The Innkeepers was also released to a small number of locations.

The Cabin In The Woods was eventually released on June 14 to 7 locations accross Australia. It opened with $85k and had terrific word of mouth and played well for a couple of weeks. There was alot of backlash with it's limited release, however I agree with Roadshow's decision to not release it widely as The Woman In Black flopped hardcore. The film DID not live up to it's praise IMO.

Apart from the released films, there were several planned releases that never happened. Paranormal Activity director Orin Peli's offering Chernobyl Diaries looked promising, but flopping in the US pulled it from out scheduled May date. After many release date changes, 2010 hit Piranha 3D's sequel, Piranha 3DD was never released on April 19 when planned for unknown reasons. I presume because it's limited US release was a massive unsuccess.
