Plot Synopsis, Review
Casey thinks she is going crazy. She has to fight and understand a demonic figure from generations ago that is slowly taking posession of her.
Good. The film has some genuinely creepy moments, and it's opening sequence hooks you. It's filled up with all the cliche's of the horror film (the slow walk up the stairs, something in the mirror) but it does it with so much confidence that it works. It's very modern too which I like, because the characters were relatable. Every ten minutes there would always be a sequence of horror that was successful only sometimes, and when it wasn't it was a dead-flat experience. Whilst the film was thoroughly enjoyable, the dark and gritty buildups for something to happen were quite boring, but paid off. The ending was predictable from about twenty minutes prior.
The plot was good. It's a somewhat unique premise, I mean how many films centre on the main character's Jewish religion. The film is from Platinum dunes, and their second original film (after The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning). It's their 5th good film in a row, but my least favourable. The dark and gloomy texture of the flick didn't really help it all because that really makes the audience bored when the setting is always dark and snowy. The effects on the demonic figures were great too, quite freaky.
The acting was good. Odette Yustman who was last seen in Cloverfield really got the right role, being stunning, and being able to look terrified. The only flaw with her was that she has some accent and promounciation of words that was a little irritating. Gary Oldman was only featured towards the end as a Rabi and was neither exceptional or awful. Meagan Good played Yustman's best friend and was actually quite great to watch.
Overall "The Unborn" is a dark, gloomy flick that has great supernatural themes and effects but it sometimes fell flat with boring the audience. My rating is 3/5
