Plot Synopsis, Review
A soon-to-be preist who lacks belief is sent on a trip to Rome to do a course with the Vatican where he will learn about exorcisms. Soon enough he slowly starts to believe.
The film has some genuinly scary moments. Whilst very few, it succeeeded in having a good amount of suspense and buit-up tension to keep you on edge for most of the time. Religious horror films really can't do much in sense of originality, because they all lead back to the same thing, God and the Devil. Hot on the heels of last years Last Exorcism, this is much better, and alot more interesting. It sets up the scene so you predict what will happen, but your guess is 90% of the time wrong.
The plot was "inspired bu true evens", which is never a good sign these days, and neither is are quotes from real people in the films opening. So after the beginning, the flick gradually starts to pull itself together into a decent little horror flick that manages to keep you entertained and understanding of whats going on. Little bits of humour were also here and there to lighten the mood which was great because religious films always seem to be so dark and negative. The ending was quite unexpected to say the least (and not in a good way). It dissapointed me, thats a given, but at least it didn't end abruptly with an opening for a sequel.
The acting was great. After the piece of shit that was last years Wolfman remake, Anthony Hopkins co-stars in a role that has him somewhat reminiscent of his award winning Hannibal Lecter. He was utterly amazing towards the end, and he is one of the best actors of his time. Colin O'Donoghue was good as Michael, the preist who fails to believe. His characters growth was great to see as he started to believe. Alice Braga (Predators) was also good as the journalist and Micahels love interest in the film.
Overall "The Rite" has some great scary moments, and keeps the viewer entertained for the length of just under 2hrs. My rating is 3/5.
