Plot Synopsis, Review
The death of a child in mysterious circumstances; sparks of a series of events that seem to represent biblical plagues, start occurring in of all places a town called *Haven* located deep in the bowels of bible belt country in the bayous of Louisiana. A former Christian missionary turned religious phenomena debunker and her top open minded student turned personnel assistant is sent to investigate
Religious. The film has a very religious tone, which is because the premisei s based on the religious 10 plagues from the years of BC. We were intrigued by each plague as it came, and there was maybe four "jump" moments. There was no tension, and nothing to keep us watching apart from the fact that we wanted to know what was so creepy about the girl, and what was causing the plagues. I didn't like the ending, mainly because it really confused me, and I still don't understand what it's message was, other than the devil will be reborn.
As a "Dark Castle Entertainment" film, I was expecting greatness and perfection, but it didn't live up to my expectations, and is one (of two) Dark Castle films I dislike. The plot was pretty straight-forward for the first hour, but as we got closer to unlcoking the mystery, I got confused and when it ended didn't know what the deal was. Character work is a big thing for a film, and this had really sloppy back-storys, which didn't help us to like them.
The acting was below-average. "Hilary Swank" in no way was shopwing her Award Winning skills, basically using a negative expression or a forced and fake smile. She was really annoying, thinking she knew all the answers. "Anna Sophia Robb" was underused, and underspoken. She said maybe 20 words the entire film.
Overall "The Reaping" is intriguing, but fails to keep you entertained with it's below average acting, it confusing last third, and is a dissapointment for the usually excellent "Dark Castle Entertainment". My rating is 2/5.
