Plot Synop
A foe church pastor has been performing exorcism's since he was young. They have all been fake, and he cannot do it any longer, so he decides to film a documentary on how he pulls it off, except his last exorcism will be extremely different to the previous ones.
The film has an extremely promising premise, trailer and promotional posters but the flick doesn't quite pull off what it set-out to do. Whilst the documentary style filming really worked with the story, it took way too long setting up before the good stuff happened. Nothing intriguing happened until the last half hour which meant that previous to that the audience is left bpred with slow pacing and the extremely up-himself pastor who thinks he is funny. That last thirty minutes was amazing, but just like Paranormal Activity, it's genuine scares take so very long to build up that as an overall film it lacked. The shaky camera is understandable and realistic, but when the audience only see's a glimpse of everything it's irritating. The poster depicting the young girls slouched up in the corner of the roof wasn't even in the film, something I was waiting and waiting for.
The plot is another reality styled mockumentary except in the marketing for the film, it never claimed to be based on a true story which was good. Whilst the characters were all in depth and morphed well they weren't exactly likeable, with the possessed girl actually being my favourite. Eli Roth produced the flick which also made me really excited. It started off average, then bombed in the middle and then had a terrific climax.
The acting was good. For a bunch of no-namers they were great. Patrick Fabian was so annoying and irritating and is the only person in this film I was hoping would die. Ashley Belle was amazing as Nell, excellently portraying young and innocent to scary as hell.
Overall "The Last Exorcism" has an amazing climax, but takes over and hour to build up to that point with really slow pacing which bores the audience. My rating is 2.5/5.
