Plot Synopsis, Review
After a traumatic experience, Molly Hartley makes a fresh start at a new school in a new town. She finds it hard to fit in, apart form several locals who are interested. Haunted by voices in her head, is it the devil inside her like her mother said?
Less-than-Average. Just another supernaturla flick that dwells between religious views and supernatural themes. It tries too hard to be a fun teen horror flick, but the underuse of many key characters made the film a mediocre experience. The sequences of terror and horror were predictabally set-up so we knew they were coming, and unlikeability of many characters leaves you with bitter thoughts. The ending was really confusing. The whole film builds up predictabally to climax where after it's over, it cuts to sometime after that event and it would seem everything's normal, but that can't be possible. The ending was a sheer dissapointment because the audience has no idea what is going on.
The plot wasn't original or unique. It's borrowed elements from everything to try balance a mix of teen fun and supernatural horror to it's disadvantage. It manages to make the audience hate many characters, and when you hate the lead character there really is no hope for the film. the confusion at the end is still hard to get over, how do they expect people to walk away from something and be satisfied when they have unresolved questions and a massive plot-hole right before the credits.
The acting was good. Hayley Bennet played lead character Molly. She was annoying, sooky (which is understandable) and was never likeable. Her face always seemed to be scrunched up too which was even worse. Chace Crawford's character was extremely underused, especially because he was the one who "saved the day" to an extent. Jake Weber should know from his work on TV's Medium that supernatural things are great when done properly, and he was good playing Molly's father, but also underused. Shannon Woodward, Shanna Collins and Annalynne McCord were also underused to the extreme. It seemed as if they were going to have a major part in the climax or something but they weren't seen ever again.
Overall, "The Haunting of Molly Hartley" is a less than average supernatural flick thats unlikeability and underuse of characters mixed with the confusing ending dissapoints majorly. My rating is 2/5.
