Plot Synopsis, Review
North America has been hit by an epidemic. People are killing themselves after a natural toxin, originally believed to be terrorism, is breathed in by them. Now, all people in the "danger zones" must fight for survival against the natural killer and get to state borders before they too, suffer the symptoms and shorlty after, kill themselves.
Original. I felt the film was a very original take on the whole "end of the world" sub-genre, and it succeeded in making the audience uncomfortable by going outside, and being a good entertainer. It was very realistic in a sense that if the epidemic weas actually happening, i'm sure many people would react the exact same. The killer in the movie, without giving too much away, was chillingly scary, mainly because they didn't need to move, and the facts giving by some crazy chacrcters gave the effect even more of a standard. I was expecting the film to be very dark and mellow, but it was pretty fast paced and for this type of movie, pretty up-beat. There was one scene involving a lion that has stuck in my mind, aswell as that opening kill scene. The deaths were very eery, and sometimes abit confronting to watch, but it was an overal good and satisfying set of kills.
The plot is original, never before have I seen nature killing people, unless man has tampered with it. Towards the end, it did get quite abit slow paced and a little boring, because we always knew who the survivors would be, and by trying to confuse us otherwise was pointless. The open ending was expected, as was the two lead characters baby news.
The acting was average. "Mark Whalberg" and "Zooey Deschanel" played the main characters who were married. "Deshcanel's" character was distant from her husband because she had Tiramisu with a friend one night and lied about it to her husband, and the whol couples relationship, aswell as their personalities, made them seem like they were nutjobs. "Whalberg's" voice was almost deafening to hear, because he was so whiny and just irritating. Unsurprisingly, the supporting cast were the real believable ones.
Overall "The Happening" is an entertaining and spine-tingling edition in the "end-of-the-world" sub-genre, and has a staisfying amount of deaths, some memorable. My rating is 3.5/5.
