THE EVIL DEAD
Plot Synopsis, Review
A group of friends hire a remote cabin in the hills, and accidentally let out an
evil spirit who starts to possess them.
As a modern horror film lover, I usually stay away from these "classics" as most of them are god awful. So when my mother tells me that this was the scariest movie she had ever seen when she was a teenager, I bought it, but never got around to watching it. Upon viewing,
I found the film to not be scary, but I can see where why people were horrified.
The film is sadistically creepy, it's make-up effects are much better than any
CGI work used these days, and the fact that a woman gets raped by the trees is
something so unique and different that this film deserves every ounce of support
it has gotten over the years. It's comical elements worked quite well, and it
even has it's own demonic catch phrase (alas Nightmare On Elm Street).
The plot is very unoriginal nowadays, but back in the early 80s this
would've been a refreshing turn for the genre. Demonic posessions had been done
before, but nothing like this. It's funny, creepy and just lets the viewer have
a good time. This film proves that you don't need a huge budget to make a
terrific movie.
Overall The Evil Dead oozes with horror and comedy that mixes well, and is alot better than some of the garbage churned out these days. My rating is 3/5.
