Plot Synopsis, Review
Ogden Marsh, an idyllic town in Midwestern USA, is contained and quarantined because of a government plane going down in their water supply river. Those who are sick, die within 48hrs or become zombie-like, and those who aren't must fight for their lives and try and survive the attack.
Great. The film is one of very few remakes that manages to keep the audience for the whole time without relying on gimmicks such as comic relief and overuse of gore, From the get go, the film was able to keep you interested, and you could sometimes even relate to the characters. The set-up was beautifully mastered and as the film slid along there wasn't a eye-rolling moment. While it had many cliche's and predictable sequences, the movie still found a way to make it unexpectedly happen. It's violence and blood level was satisfying, I think if it had overused it the film's realistic vibe would've faded quite quickly. Some death scenes were very original and fresh too which is good to see.
The plot is a re-imagining of the 1973 George A. Romero film of the same name. I haven't seen the original, but I dare say this surely must've lived up to the standards and may be even more enjoyable. The simple plot was built on cliche's, but then again which horror film isn't. The ending was quite an edge-of-seat joyride and the closing statement was the only dissapointing factor.
The acting was good. Radha Mitchell played Judy, the pregnant doctor of Ogden Marsh. Timothy Olymphant played Sheriff David (also Judy's wife). Their on-screen relationship was believable, and both really know how to make a scene work. Mitchell is becombing quite the scream queen, getting lead roles in horror's such as Silent Hill and Rogue. Olymphant played one of the killers in Scream 2 back in 1997. Danielle Panabaker also has experience in horror, playing lead character in last years remake of Friday The 13th. She's clearly grown, and has learned how to master a blood-curtling scream.
Overall "The Crazies" is an action and violence packed thrill ride that keeps you watching and wanting more. My rating is 3.5/5.
