Plot Synopsis, Review
Two scientists are experimenting with animal and human compounds. Secretly, they create a life-form that has human characteristics, but is not fully a person. After a while, the creature called Dren becomes violent and the couple have to hide her away. Eventually, Dren becomes powerful and a killing machine.
Good. The opening credit sequence was intriguing enough, then we get to the stage where the film begins. The first hour of the film was really powerful and engaging, and the last 30 minutes amped up the adrenalin. The film exceeds way beyond the viewers knowledge in medical science, which was somewhat confusing at times, and the emotional communication between the couple and Dren was a little disturbing. As the film progressed, the couple (to the viewers delight for entertainment) start to break down and fight over Dren, whether she should be alive or not. It manages to successfully manipulate the audience into feeling sympathy for Dren because in our eyes, she's just a little girl growing up extremely quickly. The film didn't have an extreme amount of blood and guts, but when it did it made sure you were watching. The ending was slightly predictable, but at leats it kept the ball rolling. The special effects were top-notch and almost unrecognisable as fake.
Dark Castle Entertainment have done it again. Another enjoyable film to add to their belt. After the extremely mediocre Whiteout last year, they get back on track with Splice. The plot was very scientific, and sometimes it was hard for me to know what was going on because of the scientific words that I have no idea what they meant. The relationship between the couple was developed so well, and their emotional connection, and at some points discomfort towards Dren was also moving to watch.
The acting was great. Adrien Brody was good as Clyde, the husband to Elsa. He was equally able to manipulate the audience into hating him at the start, but liking him towards the end. Sarah Polley was also good as Elsa. Her mothering skills aren't so great, but it was clear that she did love Dren. Delphene Chaneac played Dren... excellently. She was so weel at looking so innocent and just plain amazing to watch.
Overall "Splice" is a sci-fi horror flick that keeps you entertained and satisfied with it's characters and majority of unpredictability. My rating is 3/5.
