Plot Synopsis, Review
Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family's displeasure.
OMG, the new Twilight is out... No wait, it's just a very similar flick by the same Director. The film is so similar to Twilight, the girl torn between the nice guy who's in love with her, and the childhood friend who she's told to stay away from. So the first half and hour is just setting up the characters, her love triangle and then her sister is murdered, and a werewolf expert is brought in to hunt it. The audience is giving several suspects, all with somewhat of a motive, and we are forced to make a decision, but when the end comes rolling around, we are quite surprised. The ending was predictable, and the film was cliche ridden, but at least whilst it dragged on with it's sappiness and actually enjoyable action scenes, it always kept you guessing. Although similar to the tween-loving franchise, this is a little more hardcore. No sparkling in the sun, it's murders were a tiny bit gorey, and it had a very soft-core sex scene.
The plot is a "original" telling of the 700 year old fairytale Red Riding Hood. Whilst it was great it kept true to the tale (what big eyes you have etc.) what makes the audience keep afloat is trying to figure out who the werewolf is, and why they want her. It's quite a dark film which I loved, and at least it manages to satisfy with some action sequences. The CGI werewolf was just horrible, and the size of it was just unbelievable (yes, i know it's a mythical creature but it just seemed odd).
The acting was good. Amanda Seyfried back in a genre flick which is great. Awesome in Jennifer's Body and Solstice, she's come a long way since Mean Girls. Her growth from an innocent beauty to a strong woman was great to watch. Love interests Shiloh Fernandez and Max Irons were the Edward and Jacob of the story.
Overall Red Riding Hood is similar to Twilight, but is much darker and a little more hardcore (only abit) and is actually a good who-dunnit thriller. My rating is 3/5.
