Plot Synopsis, Review
The story is inspired by the disappearance in the late 80's of a North American couple who disappeared in the West Australian desert on a 4WD holiday. They were never seen alive again. Their abandoned vehicles and totally unused supplies were found in sand dunes near an Aboriginal sacred site--less than an hour away from the closest town. Two years later, the two men were both found dead of natural causes, on the same day, 1000 miles apart back in North America. This May 2007, twenty years after the original incident, TOP CAT FILMS and iconic director George Miller commence production of the story of 3 couples who set out into the same desert and unluckily end up in the same area, at the same time of year, with disastrous results. The previously unrevealed psychological and sexual liaisons the couple's had secretly shared come to light as there lives end one-by-one. Who will survive?
Um?. Most films go for 90 minutes minimum, yet this film only went for 79, and I really didn't seem to care. It was confusing, and there seemed no real reason for these people to be in the desert in the first place, plus the ending I doubt any person who watched it understood it. This is one of the most pathetic and utterly confusingly weird films I have ever seen, and the fact that it is Australian, makes me ashamed to admit i'm an Aussie. From the first five minutes, I wondered what path the film was going down, and if it qould find a way to redeem itself from the shocking mess it got itself into. The desert setting looked fake, and the music didn't fit in with the story, and it was just a terrible terrible 79 minutes wasted from my life. The deaths were mediocre, and the gore was obsiously fake.
The plot was disgraceful. There was so many plot holes, and things that were never explained in the end. At one stage there was 4 people, two in each car, but in the scenes where it showed them driving, there were three cars, and while watching you just think why the hell does this film keep digging it's grave deeper and deeper and deeper. In the last five minutes a girl was buried in the dirt, her head above the ground (she's still alive), and the other girl was getting written on by some weirdo, but the weirdest part was when the character (who is pregant to her on-screen boyfriend) decides to kiss the other girl when they escape the place.
The acting was the crappest part of the film. "Natalie Bassingthwaighte" was amazing on TV soap "Neighbours", but was as plain as an arraroot biscuit in her film debut. The entire cast was an emotionless and expressionless bunch of douches driving through the desert to get to some beach for a surf, which was not a realistic idea in the first place. There other faults with the acting, where the characters (who were dead) were clearly breathing everytime the camera went near them, and one woman even blinked.
Overall "Prey" is the most pathetic film I have ever seen, had too many plot holes, and the acting was horrible. My rating is 0/5. We are all told to support Australian films and stop piracy of them, but when pieces of shit like this come out, it makes me wonder why people started buying pirated DVD's.... they are cheap, reasonable quality, and if they were shit, it was only a few dollars spent. I just wish I could get my $5.50 back from the DVD shop I rented this from.
