Plot Synopsis, Review
After a quake opens up a sub-terranean lake beneath the one above, thousands of hungry Piranha believed to be extinct start to feed on the 20,000 college spring break kids.
Gorey. Lets just say, this film puts the Saw franchise in it's place. It's a much welcomed throwback to the B grade movies of yesteryear. It doesn't try too hoo hard to scary, but has some extreme moments of momentumous terror. The opening scene gets the ball rolling, and after a while you tend to love the over-the-top goriness that makes this film for the most part entertaining. Once the lake is filled with the flesh-eating pre-historic fish, we get sequences of non-stop limbless teens and superb death scenes. Seriously, the films death scenes are amazingly refreshing. If not extremely on the predictable side, the film manages to let you know someones gonna get killed, but it makes it unique by having them ravaged in a cool way. The ending was mega-predictable but that doesn't mea theres no fun to be had. What i love about the flick is it's gore, I can't get over it. The water turned red, and basically every teenager had flesh wounds enough to make you cringe.
The plot is a re-imagining of the late-70's flick of the same name, only this time in 3D. Directed by Alexandre Aja, who helmed the excellent 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes and the average 2008 remake Mirrors, he gives the audience what it wants by the gallon-full....blood, gore, nudity and humour. It's comedic sequences (which include a certain Piranha eating then spitting out a penis) was just one of the comical scenes. The 3D is better than you'd expect, sometimes it was just like you were there, and it had a reason to be 3D because it makes the experience that much more realistic. Not huge clear plot-holes, but I was dissapointed that alot of scenes from the trailer were not in the film.
The acting was good. Elisabeth Shue played the Sheriff, and while she was unsuccessful in keeping the teens out of the water, she was great in playing a realistic mother fighting for her kids survival. Jerry O' Connel is one of the most annoying people i've ever watched on screen, and him playing a complete jackass douchebag made it that much more enjoyable waiting and hoping he would soon be a rotting feast for the Piranha's. Steven R. Mqueen and Jessica Szohr were the two teenage lovers who weren't lovers but were lovers (yeah, that cliche :P) who got together in the end.
Overall "Piranha 3D" is a gorey and deliciously awesome flick that has the Saw movies running for it's money. My rating is 4/5
