Plot Synopsis, Review
After one of them kills themselves in a suspicious incident, a group of friends realise there more to their childhood than they remember. They soon realise that a terrible secret involving their parents has a psychopath after them in their dreams. Unwilling to sleep, they will do whatever they can to stop him, and find out the truth behind the terrible secret shut away from the world.
Weak. I went into it with little expectations, as i'm not exactly a fan of the original, but after seeing the "re-imagining" the original has earnt a little more respect from me. Lets face it, remaking a classic film like this gives you so many oppurtunities and potential to make this the best remake ever, but Platinum Dunes seem to be sliding down the slope of greatness towards utter shitness. Spitting in the face of many original fans, re-created scenes, including the beloved original scene of Freddy coming out of the wall, were used with clearly fake CGI, and the character set-ups weren't exactly present here either. Krueger's motive was changed slightly, and predictability and cliche's were evident from a mile away. For a film with many paths to go down, they chose an extremely dull one. I will admit that I jumped (apparently) nine times, showing the film was ucessful in
The plot was re-imagined from Wes Craven's late 70s classic "A Nightmare On Elm Street", which is among the most popular horror film in existence. Modernising the tale would always be expected, and that was all well and fine, but there were so many little inconsistent things in the plot that if you pay attention to films (like I do), you'll find irritating.
The acting was awful. They were all a bunch of expressionless and emotionless people grouped together. I know given the circumstances they shouldn't be happy, but how about changing from the natural expression every once in a while. 'Rooney Mara' played 'Nancy', and to her credit she was sometimes able to show a glimpse of personality, otherwise being an annoying twat. "Katie Cassidy", maybe if her face wasn't covered in 25 more layers of make-up than usual I would've been able to believe she was actually crying and showing emotion. "Kyle Gallner" looks the same in every movie. With "The Haunting in Connecticut" and "Jennifer's Body" being decent, he stayed exactly the same in this, dissapointing. "Robert Englund" can never be replaced, we all know that, but hearing 'Jackie Earle Haley's' atrocious take on the voice was killing me. Freddy has a new motive, and a new look too. Anyone remember Hannibal Lecter's original victim, Mason Verger?... well Freddy looks just like that mutant. It was really annoying too because only his bottom lip moved, the rest of the face was frozen.
Overall "A Nightmare On Elm Street" is a weak re-imagining, and a dissapointment, but is one of the better editions to the franchise. My rating is 2.5/5.
