My Bloody Valentine (1981)
Plot Synopsis, Review
There's a big valentine-party planned in the little coal mining town of Valentine Bluffs, Nova Scotia. It is the first Valentine's Day party in 20 years, because then there was an accident in the mine, and the accident happened because the men responsible for the security was at the party. The sole surviving miner, named Harry Warden, later killed them, and told the town NEVER to arrange a Valentine's Day party again. The party begins, and so does the killing...
Allright. Prior to seeing this (the original), I had seen the 2009 remake, which kept some scenes, but i'm glad that it wasn't mostly the same, or I really wouldn't have liked this. It was great in keeping the viewer intrigued and interested, by giving the audience creative deaths, and tension building suspenseful scenes. There sadistic open-ending left me rolling my eyes, and the idiotic stereotypical sexually-active teens (who looked in their mid 20s) was irritating, but in all realness, the film served up a nice 90minutes that was fun, and enjoyable.
The plot was original (back in the day), and still today I thoought, with not a single film coming to mind about a sadistic miner (other than the remake). The characters were stereotypical teens, but the dialogue is out-dated, but I presume it was "hip" back in the day. There was one scene towards the end that I got the inkling who the killer was, and when I turned out right, the tension building, action sequence was pretty pointless to me.
The acting was average. I find it really hard to praise acting from years ago, because to me, it seems so fake and unrealistic, especially with the dialogue being very laughable. I think it was a reasonably good cast, other than a few that didn't quite fit in.
Overall "My Bloody Valentine" has out-dated dialogue and stereotypical characters, but is successful in drawing the viewer in, and giving them a satisfying amount of death and suspense. My rating is 3/5
