Plot Synopsis, Review
In a remote mining town that is destined to be abandoned, a barrel of toxic waste falls off a truck and into a creek. Insect from the creek are then fed to spiders at the towns "exotic spider farm", and the spiders seem to be growing at an alarming rate. The town must stick together against all odds and fight these Eight Legged Freaks or they will become the next meal on the menu.
Fun. This is an extremely fun movie, crossing between the frighteneing elements of horror and comedy for a perfect balance. The horror is definately there, who in their right mind wouldn't hate giant spiders roaming around killing anything living, but the comical jolts whether it be spiders seemingly have voices (but not talking) or some ice-breaking dialogue. It doesn't take itself seriously which for this type of movie it shouldn't, and it's scenes of chaos when the town is overrun are excellent. Many scenes of the movie will be stuck in your head for a while because they are visually excellent. I have to say that while alot of the CGI was great, there were some clearly fake spiders. The ending was predictable, but by no means dissapointing.
The plot was original. Inspired by the director's short film, the plot is similar to the likes of "Tarantula" and "The Blob", only this has many breeds of spiders hunting and killing helpless humans. It was successful in keeping us entertained and slumped back where we are sitting, and the many deaths of both humans and spiders provides the audience with jolts of adrenaline.
The acting was good. "David Arquette" is a weird guy who always seems to play weird characters, and funnily enough he's great it. "Kari Wuhrer" was the lead female, starring as Sheriff of the town, and she was just as good as Arquette. "Scarlett Johansson" in her early years. Who knew that she would go on to become one of the most sought after and wanted actresses in the world.
Overall "Eight Legged Freaks" is a fun and equally thrilling ride full of spiders, death and jolts. My rating is 3.5/5.
