Plot Synopsis, Review
3 days befroe the full moon, Ellie and brother Jimmy are inb a car accident, where the woman driving the other car is savagely attacked by an unidentified beast. Soon, as more people are mysteriously mauled, Jimmy thinks that the beast is a mythical Werewolf, and that he and Ellie may end up becoming one.
Cool. "Wes Craven" hits another high with a film that's premise seems abit off (the whole mythical creatuyre feature doesn't appeal to me), but the film was actually entertaining and keeps you guessing the whole way. There was always an instance of you believing you know who the werewolf is, or thinking that they have something to do with it, but majority of the time you would be proven wrong. It's dark, and had some comical relief, which tore away the scary atmoshphere (well, what was left of it), and made the film a little unrealistic, but fun. Apart from several cliche's (The predictability of the killer, knowing who would survive), the film managed to keep you intrigued with one characters sub-plot, one refreshing death scene, and action sequences throughout. The straight-forward ending was a relief, because when films have an open-ending it really pisses me off, especially when there really shouldn't be one, and it doesn't fit in.
The plot was good. It was written by "Kevin Williamson", and directed by "Wes Craven", who both worked together on horror hit "Scream" back in 1996. While "Craven's" "Nightmare On Elm Street" franchise is forgivable, this decade he has been associated with some very good horror projects ("The Hills Have Eyes (2006)", "The Last House on the Left (2009)", and "Don't Look Down". The only negative thing from the plot is that I don't think there was enough character work from the two lead's perspective (Their parents had died, but thats basically all we were informed on).
The acting was good. "Christina Ricci" is definately an awkward person to watch. While she managed to be realistic and believable, her scenes of her character being terrified were awkward to watch. "Jesse Eisenberg" was successful as the nerdy brother (watch for the cliche end), and "Joshua Jackson" was able to makes us wary of him. The film had a very modern cast, with even singer "Mya" appearing as a victim, and along with "Shannon Elizabeth", they had some cool death scenes.
Over the last year or so there is one scene in this film that I distinctly remembered (Mya's death scene), but could never remember what the movie was. Not knowing who the actress was either, and no one else seemed to know what film I was referrring to, I just stopped looking for the answer, but I saw this DVD for $7 on special, and only bought it because I was reading about it the day before online. I almost wet myself when I saw that scene that I had remembered because i finally got some closure.
Overall "Cursed" is a entertaining and watchable creature feature, that keeps you intrigued and satisfied. My rating is 3/5.
