Plot Synopsis, Review
Welfare worker Emily saves 10 year old Lily just in time before she is cooked in the oven by her parents. Persuaded by Lily to let her live with her, Emily is yet to realise that the little girl who she thought she was saving, is not what she seems. Now, as people start to die that are all somehow linked to Lily, Emily must fight for her survival.
Thrilling. The film starts off intriguing us with every minute passing, and when we eventually get to the stage of the little girl getting cooked by her parents, that was the start of the filming eventually reaching the peak of ending. I will admit, for a film filmed three years ago, that hyas been delayed for two years finally gets released, I can't say that I was expecting too high of a standarded film, but I have been waiting and waiting and was pretty excited, and the film livd up to my expectations. The death scenes were well executed, and the suspenseful tension between Emily and Lily was growing and growing until we could no longer take it. At every little sequence that made the audience jump, there would be a 20 second pause in dialogue so we could regain the atmosphere and settle back to be scared once more. I fell one of the most effective parts of the entire film was the ending. Just when you think it's a ending too staright-forward to be true, we are then pulled back into a 10 minute sequence that has us edge-on-seat, and drooling for more. Even with a cinema packed full of a range of age groups, the movie still managed to creep everyone out at one point or another.
The plot wasn't entirely original, and for those who had seen another 2009 flick that featured the same type of killer ("Orphan", where the little orphan girl is also the killer), you probably will find this that much more entertaining, because although they have totally different moods to one-another, they both carry the same simple premise which originally gets the viewer hooked. A little girl that is killing for an undisclosed reason, until the end. "C ase 39's" Lily however, is a demon, and can make you do whatever it is that she wants... or else. It worked terrifically, with the only thing that I found to slightly dissapoint, was that it wasn't very clear how or why she became a demon.
The acting was great. "Renee Zellwegger" stars, and yes I know what your thinking, that she must've been terrible, but she was actually a refreshing and believable person for the role. She suited and played her character well, with there only one thing being a low-light for her... her nasily voice. "Jodelle Furland' played the evil girl, and was effectively able to mess with our minds. One minute she's a crazy bitch, the next she's an innocent victim, and whatever personality she had, she was still believable.
Overall "Case 39" provides us with scares, and is a entertaining edge-of-seat horror. Why it has been delayed so long is a HUGE mystery to me. My rating is 3.5/5.
