Plot Synopsis, Review
It's christmas time, and a sorority house is just about to begin their yearly Secret Santa. Little do they know, the houses long lost secret is coming home for christmas, and was them all to be his family now.
Excellent. This film is just utterly brilliant. Every few horror remakes their is one that just sticks out and stays with you. This is amazingly executed, and gorey as hell. It's definately one of my favourite films now. I was hooked from the beginning, a bunch of hot girls in a house knowing soon they will all be brutally murdered draws me in. As the film progressed, it got more sick and twisted than you would ever think. Whether it's the liver condition, the incest, the fetish with eye's or the head hanging on top of the christmas tree, this film delivers and doesn't let up. Whilst the ending was predictable, it was still entertaining.
The plot is a very modernised take on the early 70's flick of the same name. The group of girls has all those sterotypes (the biggest bitch, the nice girl, the outcast, the daddy's girl etc etc) so it's relatable to many high school people who know similar persons. As each girl got picked off, it was in an original and exciting way. The tension builds from the first murder, and as the killer makes his way around the house preying on who's alone, there's another secret that gets revealed with an excellent 70's flashback with a mother who is enough to scare anyone.
The acting was great. Most of the cast have had some experience in horror. Katie Cassidy has been in When A Stranger Calls the same year and is the lead in this. She was great at being innocent and terrified. I don't think there is one film in which Crystal Lowe has a supporting role where her tits AREN'T out, as she plays the biggest bitch of em' all. Her Final Destination 3 castmate Mary-Elizabeth Winstead plays a very self-centered bitch awesomely. Michelle Trachtenberg played a loyal friend, and a great victim. Lacey Chabert had a cool death, and Kristen Cloke was great being the big sister to one of the victims.
Overall "Black Christmas" hits all the right notes. Great deaths, gore, plot and acting and is one of the best remakes out there. My rating is 4/5.
