Theatrical Release: November 12, 2009 DVD Release: March 17, 2010 (2-disc collector's edition also avaliable, and an Exclusive Collector's tin free when bought at Ezy DVD) BOX OFFICE: Opening weekend, and the film storms atop the Aussie box office wit a triumphant $6,075,162. With $15,000 average at the 405 sites screening it, the film shows no remorse for competitors, but will probably have a semi-big decrease next week with "New Moon" releasing. 2nd weekend, and the 40% decrease was expected with "New Moon" having the biggest opening (and any) weekend in Australian cinematic history (With $16.1 million). The film grossed $3,618,296 at 405 sites with an average of $8,934. 3rd weekend, and 38% decrease. Grosses $2,246,241 at 393 sites. It's still amazing to me that this film has been able to keep audiences week-after-week. With a 4th weekend, another small decrease, the film averages $3,139 at 361 sites with a gross of $1,133,497. As it fades away, my guess is that it's final gross will stand somewhere between $22 and $25 million. 5th weekend, and a small decrease of 26% pulls the films gross to $18.7 million so far. A 51% 6th weekend decrease, and the film has a total of $19.5 million to date. A 64% 7th weekend decrease was expected, the film should fade fast now. Plot Synopsis, Review
The Mayans predicted it, and now it's happening. The end of the world is upon us, and this story follows a family struggling to survive against all odds in order to survive the apocalypse that will happen on December 21, 2012.
Long. Going for a lengthy 2 and a half hours, the film really needed to step-up-to-the-plate in order to keep the audience. While we were reeled in and kept entertained by the disaster scenes every five minutes or so, it was never able to be fully realistic, and was so cliche and predictable. There are a few edge-on-seat scenes were I was literally swearing at the characters, b ut that made the experience more enjoyable. In a packed cinema, it was sometimes hard to absorb the atmosphere because of people laughing at dialogue that wasn't (in my opinion) intended to be funny. The tension and awkwardness of a father and son telling eachother "I love you" was moving, and really makes you think about what would you do if it were actually happening. The CGI and special effects were amazing. It looked so real, and frightening and gave me shivers just looking at it. The fact that there were no Satellite towers, and people were still somehow calling each other was unrealistic, and with a film like this I really think they should try to be as realistic as possible. Also unrealism was the way a limo manages to get out of being destroyed just in the nick of time for about 5 minutes. That sequence was predictably thrilling.
The plot was very familiar, as basically every disaster movie has the same plot. A family or group of people fighting for survival, but with different sequences. This one was far superior to the mediocre "The Day After Tomorrow", and I felt the character work was much better. There was conflicts between characters, but it was realistic because they knew they had to overcome it in order to survive. I didn't like the ending, and predictability of it (and the entire film). There was also a character of whom we have no idea is alive. We saw her gasping for air, and never saw her again leaving me to assume she's dead, but who knows?.
The acting was great. For this type of flick, the acting really needs to be top-notch in order to keep you believing the story, and the characters themselves. "John Cusack" was the star, and his likeable character made you root for him the whole way. Supporting cast and characters were great too.
Overall "2012" isn't as great as you'd expect, but is still great for sequences of destruction. My rating is 3/5.
